Chemistry #2

Green Chemistry

There's really amazing research point to soil production reducing carbon in the air. The process is called soil carbon sequestration. This is a tiny way in which, we as individuals can both create healthy environments to create plants and also pull carbon from the air.

Carbon Footprint

I couldn't calculate my carbon footprint because I've moved so many times in the past year and don't have record of how much electricity or gas I've used. However, I walk or bike to school and work everyday, take BART for longer distances and turn off the lights when they're not in use. While I feel that it's important to limit our energy use, in order to develop a rapport with the natural environment and respect the resources available to us, we must also acknowledge that most of the earth's resources are used by corporations. A lot of water and gas is wasted through poor farming practices, mono-crops, and soil tilling. Placing responsibility on the individual to "save" the environment obscures capitalism's role in in wasteful consumptions and mismanagement of resources for profit.
