Biochemistry - The Chemistry of Life - Week 11

Biochemistry is the study of the chemicals, chemical reactions and chemical interactions that take place in living organisms.

Biochemistry looks at how living forms sustain life through their chemical activity: how animals continue on in life through metabolism; how the brain gives us certain experiences based on what neurotransmitters are flooding through it; how the Sun interacts with plants to make them grow. At the moment, I am very interested in the relationship between fungal life, thriving ecosystems and what medicinal actions mushrooms have on our bodies. While understanding the implications of chemical structures on our health can be very reductionist--having the language of biochemistry assist in validating herbal medicine and many ecological principles in mainstream science. I look forward to developing this language and understanding the world more deeply.
