Avogadro's Hypothesis states that two volumes of gases have the same number of molecules: that 10 mL of Oxygen has the same number of molecules as 10 mL of Carbon. The two volumes must be at the same pressure and temperature. This appears to indicate that despite the atomic mass of each element, the mass of gases is dependent on their volume.
Avogadro's number, or a mole, refers the 'Atomic Mass Units' in each gram of an element. Therefore, 1 gram of Hydrogen equals 6.02x10^23 AMU. Furthermore, 12 grams of Carbon equals 12 moles and thus has 72.24(10^23) AMU.
